Today’s pattern is the ever popular football hat, miniaturized for tiny adorable heads. I wanted a quick sporty design to round out my collection, and this one was so easy and perfect.
Please see the basic beanie post for some general notes on preemie hats before starting.
Using brown worsted weight yarn and H or I hook
Row 1: Ch4, sl st to form loop. Ch2, 12 dc into loop. Sl st to top of first ch2 (12 st).
Row 2: Ch2, dc in same st, 2 dc in each ch around, sl st to last st (24 st).
Row 3: Switch to white yarn. Ch1, hdc in same st, *1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* repeat from * around. Sl st to last st (36 st).
Rows 4-7: Switch back to brown. Ch2, 1 dc in each st around. Sl st to last st (36 st).
Row 8: Switch back to white. Ch1, 1 hdc in each st around. Sl st to last st (36 st).
Rows 9-10: Switch back to brown. Ch1, sc in each st around. Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Using approximately 12″/24cm of white yarn, sew a vertical line down the middle of the hat. (I sewed it twice.) Sew 3 small horizontal ‘stitches’ evenly down the white stripe. Weave in ends and fasten off.
Note: I was lazy and just carried the white yarn for the two rows of white on the hat. If you want to be super tidy, you can fasten each row off as you go… but then it’s just another few ends to weave in.
That’s it! Happy crocheting!!
