Crochet Vintage Flowered Cloche Pattern

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I am proud (and relieved) to finally present to you: the vintage flowered cloche!

Crochet Vintage Flowered Cloche Pattern | Classy Crochet

This hat has been in the making for years.  Literally, years.  For those of you in the crochet ‘know’, you may recognize this hat, most likely from Anthropologie back in something like 2010.  I saw it online and began my long and arduous journey to try and recreate it myself.  The friggin cluster stitch!  That elusive brim!  Let’s just say I didn’t get very far those first few tries.

A year or two later, imagine my surprise when I saw the very same hat (at least, it looked the same to me) being sold at World Market for a fraction of the cost.  I should have just bought the darn thing and taken it apart, but my stingy Asian self just couldn’t pony up the $16.99, so I made my poor husband take a zillion photos of the hat in store instead.  (“Why are we doing this again?” “JUST TAKE THE PICTURE.”)  More experimenting followed.

Anyhoo, I discovered that my biggest obstacle to success was finding the right kind of yarn.  All of my regular worsted weights were just looking kind of weird.  It turns out that single ply, roving medium weight yarn is really the key to the hat here, and unsurprisingly, really. hard. to. find.  I started out with Berroco Lustra, but was reticent to sell a hat/publish a pattern that required one specific kind of (rather more expensive) yarn that wasn’t easily obtainable.  I like the fancy yarns and all, but I really also like my hats and patterns to be accessible to the ‘regular’ folk that aren’t on first name bases with their local yarn store aficionados, y’know?

Fast forward MORE years later, and finally Caron has come out with its own big-box brand!  Vickie Howell’s Sheep(ish) yarn is a great bargain substitute if you don’t have access to the Lustra (which I’ve found is often discontinued and sometimes still hard to find).  However, my snobby self has to make an appearance and say that comparing the final product of the two brands, Berroco really is sooooo nice.  Use it to make the hat for yourself and the Caron brand for your friends.  There, I said it.

  1. Thanks for creating the pattern. What a familiar tale. I too, saw it at World Market; I hemmed and hawed at spending the $16, but broke down and bought the hat. My husband was with me at the time, and asked, “couldn’t you just make this?” “Of course”, I replied with confidence bordering on arrogance. (I might have even snorted.) Then I couldn’t figure out how to start it; I counted and played with it, and then tackled the brim, and after all that, I frogged the whole thing, and gave the original hat to my neighbor who wears it better than I do. I also thought a one-ply was the way to go, so I bought Lambs Pride, but then used it for another cluster stitch beanie. So YAY for you.

    • Your story made me laugh. Another reason why it took me so long to get this pattern out is because the hat looks totally ridiculous on my own head, so I just assumed there was a very small population out there that would want to wear this themselves. The other night when I finished my third version (to test the pattern) I put it on and asked my husband what he thought and he was like “ummmm…. on you? Or in general? On you… like something out of Little House on the Prairie. But I’m sure it would look great on someone else?” The end.

  2. This is simply stunning! I’ve been eyeballing it for some time. A much as I love the cloche style, I look ridiculous in it. My daughter however, looks gorgeous. I’ve found a free pattern for a similar hat in a child’s size but the instructions aren’t very clear. I’m now purchasing so your directions can “help” me with the child size hat. I’m not an experienced crocheter but I can follow clear instructions well. Crossing my fingers 🙂

  3. If I purchase the pattern how long does it take to get it? I would like to have this hat for a Christmas photo which is 7 days away. Also, the hat would be for a 3month old.

    • Hi Lorie– You should be able to receive the pattern immediately via instant download. However, the pattern is written for an adult women’s size. If you are comfortable altering patterns I can try giving you a few tips on how to make it smaller. In the meantime I am working on childrens’ sizing. Thanks for dropping by!

    • Hi! I’d say it’s an intermediate pattern. There are a few new stitches but the tutorials are all available. Also, please note that the hat tends to run small, so if you’re a beginner crocheter, I”d recommend going up a few hook sizes and remember to keep your gauge loose. Good luck!

    • Hi Christine
I saw your comment that you made several of these and that they came out great. Since you said that this pattern is easy but I’m having difficulty, would you be able to help me out some? I would really appreciate it. Thank you! Lorraine

  4. So frustrated as this “Vintage Flowered Cloche” is the picture that is posted along with the title Free Pattern: but the free pattern is for the heart earmuffs hat. My computer runs slow, so by the time I get to the “pattern” I am already frustrated and feel taken advantage of. I am on a limited income and can not afford to continuously purchase patterns. Please fix this so others are not duped into going to a site only to be so disappointed. I love the pattern but feel tricked.

  5. Hello!
I just purchased your beautiful pattern, and am making it for my little sister’s 12th birthday. However, can you explain how you do the cluster stitch? I have been working the pattern using the cluster stitch I learned from a book, but it must certainly not be the same one as in your pattern, for it isn’t working at all.

    Thanks so very much!

  6. I purchased your pattern, have tried getting this started for about 2 hours now. I can’t seem to get it. Do you have a more detailed pattern with pictures? If so, please email me. I really want to give this to my Grandmother for Christmas. Thanks :0)

  7. This is soooo pretty! I’ve been crocheting for decades but I rarely get my gauge right. If I can finally figure it out, this beauty is next on my list. Also, you’re comments are fun to read — and not too long.
